This is the first article I posted for the viewspaper,
"Women on Top"
“Woman must not accept; she must challenge. She must not be awed by that which has been built up around her;she must reverence that woman in her which struggles for expression”.~ Margaret Sanger ~
The quote says it all.
Recently, the Govt. of India passed an act stating that women would be given 50% reservations in the Village panchayats.
Conjure up this. You decide to go to the outskirts of your city. Maybe because it’s raining and you want to go on a long drive. You reach a village. Your car is punctured. U have no choice, but to go out and ask the local residents for help. You go to a small house made of mud. You see a woman aged 20 draped shaggily in a saree, raising 5 children, cooking on “chulha”,her master constantly shouting at her.
You look out and see the woman in your car, sitting comfortably in the car, upright and independent. you compare the two situations.
Well, I believe that a woman can run the house and country with equal elan.
A women by birth is considered to be an unbiased and fair judge. That is why you can see the statue of a women on the court blindfolded and not a man.
The act of granting women 50% seats in the panchayat is seen as a new change to the Indian society. Now SHE is not known as only as somebody’smother or wife but also as an individual, who has her own identity.
As seen before, the panchayat pramukhs were mainly MEN. They had supreme authority in the judgement of the village issues, but now the women has also entered the clan and can judge the issue.
Women have the ability to think pragmatically on any issue, plus in a democratic country that India is, it is important that she walks shoulder to shoulder with her male counterpart.
As Jawarharlal Nehru once said,”Women upliftment would result in not only growth of society but also the country”.
On a closing note, this act would strengthen our democracy and also the basic judicial system at the grassroot level which would result in the growth and prosperity of our country.
“WOMEN IS NO MORE A WEAKER SEX BUT A FAIRER SEX”
Feedback -
Hi Neetal,
This is a good article and is well written however this is not elaborate enough. You have touched points like the village panchayat and then narrated general ideas about women in India. Undoubtedly, it a well written article but there are points missing. When you say “WOMEN IS NO MORE A WEAKER SEX BUT A FAIRER SEX” you should give proper justification to the statement and fortunately there are quite a few that could have been included but you have missed out. You could have included the success of women in management, business, science, and politics. Maybe give a couple of examples.
You have choosen a good topic and written it interestingly .
